Health patio of the north

Ice Road, Barrow, Alaska (USA)

A delightful and interesting garden of the north- way north- the tundra itself – Barrow, Alaska (USA) was graciously shared with us by Jessica Damiano, of Garden Detective (blog.) The catchy tag line of this blog? “A garden blog by Jessica Damiano that gets to the root of things.” (literal LOL)

I learned all about Anne Brygger from Barrow, Alaska, her blog, Tundra Garden, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks!

As a point of information, in the tundra, the growing season ranges from 50 to 60 days. The average winter temperature is -34° C (-30° F), but the average summer temperature is 3-12° C (37-54° F) which enables this biome to sustain life. A layer of permanently frozen subsoil called permafrost exists, consisting mostly of gravel and finer material. There are a wide variety of plants that are able to resist the cold climate.
