Warmth of a H.U.G. (Home Utility Gift)

Here is a new idea and timely- purchasing a H.U.G. (Home Utility Gift)!  This is a program offered in my locale by Louisville Electric and Gas (LG&E) for customers who want to warm up their loved ones, literally.  In the winter season where utility bills creep up higher and pull funds away from other categories in the budget, anyone can go ahead and pay some or all of another household’s bill.

“Even with wholesale natural gas costs at six-year lows, many families are on fixed budgets because of the sluggish economy and are trying to manage their energy usage more wisely,” said John P. Malloy, Vice President of Energy Delivery — Retail for E.ON U.S. “These non-traditional gift certificates are the perfect idea for many shoppers because they are unique, convenient, and very practical for any recipient.”

A Very Happy Birthday in Galveston (TX)

It’s a girl! and P.S. It is Health Patio’s real life birthday (She’s 39 years old this year and having the time of my life!)

Congratulations are in order as reported in a copyrighted article posted by Harvey Rice of chron.com, Houston & Texas News.  What a pleasure to see this ray of sunshine already cheering up her mom, dad and the whole Galveston (TX) neighborhood-

Jennifer Ramirez-Hernandez was the first baby born on Galveston Island since the hurricane struck Sept. 13. She was born at 8:46 a.m. Monday at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s John Sealy Hospital, UTMB spokesman Raul Reyes said.

Jennifer, who weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, was delivered by Caesarean section to Maria Hernandez, 38, and Florencio Hernandez, 28, both of Texas City, on the first day of operations for UTMB’s maternity unit since the storm.

Books: The Gateway Drug to Knowledge

Bartemaeus

I pity those who “hate” reading. I really do. Life is absolutely nothing without the gift of literature. And, like I said before, books are a gateway drug to knowledge. When one is engaged in a book, (that means reading) one may feel inthe book. What I mean is, actually thinking through the characters eyes and sparking one’s imagination.

So who needs TV? Ok, there is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy that started out as books, evolved into classics, and then they filled up the big screen. Cinema and TV are totally different. Ok, then there is Masterpiece Theater and anything else by station WGBH. These are the exceptions that prove the rule.

Remember when the internet first was getting popular, some urban legend got started that it was going to replace all books and any or all printed material? Actually, the opposite is true, that people just would rather find what they need online, then PRINT IT OUT to read, AFK (away from keyboard.) Result: there are more books than ever. P.s. Don’t forget the books about how to use the information technology effectively!

What are you reading? I’m working on the Bartemaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud for my fiction selections, and for non-fiction I am getting a jump start on spring by reading a library copy of The Victory Garden Landscape Guide.

Finally, speaking of library, let’s go!

Stress…it isn't mandatory

There is no such thing as stress. Was that a stressful statement? No; because stress does not exist. But millions of people suffer from it. How can so many people suffer over something that isn’t real?

To tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea. But, I don’t suffer from stress. Why? Because I really don’t believe in it. Its neither healthy nor helpful nor does it get things done.

Think about it. When you’re stressed, what happens? Let me answer that for you…nothing. Nothing happens. And that’s why the whole world is stressed out. Its a never ending circle of hate. You’re stressed because nothings getting done and nothings getting done because you’re stressed. That is how our economy works. Doesn’t that just suck?

Well, it doesn’t have to. Because this whole circle could be stopped by one person. You. All you have to do is relax. Sit down, take a deep breath, step out from the stress and welcome in a new sense perspective. Hey, if I did it, then you probably can too.

Relaxed thinking

I’m always listening to music. Whether it be calm, loud or anything in between, it always sends out a message. No matter how vague or in your face, there is most likely a deep(er) message. But, you’re never going to get the full message with listening to the song once. You may get a message, but its probably not the one the composer is attempting to send out. It’s interesting, once you look at the lyrics to a beloved song.

Sure the tune is catchy, but what is the writer really trying to get out in the open?

Now, whats this got to do with health? Everything, my dear reader. Music exercises the brain in a healthy, constructive way. It allows us to reach out with our creative side and actually do “relaxed thinking.”

I know there are countless others who would say, “There is no such thing as “relaxed thinking.” But, in truth, we would all be nothing without relaxed thinking. So the next time you pop in your Enya CD, sit down, shut out other sounds (for best results, do this when dinner is not in the oven), take a seat in your favorite chair, and let the sound fill you up. Listen to the lyrics, what do they mean to you?

Guitar Hero

Guitar hero

In our society, video games and media are the supreme rulers. We bow to the sacred game consoles and and beg for the latest brain rot (video game).

But now the Guitar Hero by Harmonix series is taking a new hold on the nation, an interactive game with a mini eletric guitar with 5 or 6 keys. It encourages players to get on their feet and rock out! At least it encourages me.

I don’t know if it’s healthy, but it makes you move more than the standard sitting-down-and-veggitizing game controler. The only things those things do is make your hands hurt.

Hit the corresponding buttons on a toy plastic guitar, and some familiar rock anthems, from Weezer’s “My Name is Jonas,” to Foghat’s “Slow Ride,” blare fluidly from your television’s speakers. Miss a note, and you’ll hear a loud clanking sound. Continue reading
