Allopathic Medicine is Great – When You Have to Call 911

I had a run to the ER this week for forehead stitches for my little boy. I don’t know why I keep the edges of my doors so sharp but… speed was also a factor in the incident…(both the boy and the door were in motion!) Ouch!

Our bodies are designed to self regulate and be healthy. Unfortunately, accidents happen. And when they do, I am glad for sterile fields, clean gauze pads, and blood pressure cuffs. Any news website, TV media or print periodical report daily accidents and 911 calls because something happened to someone. Just because it may be well and truly no one’s fault, there are times when allopathic medicine experts must rush in to save life or limb.

Healthy Child ~ Healthy World

Healthy Child Healthy World

I was so happy when I read this fundraising press release to assist the good efforts of Healthy Child Healthy World last Saturday, October 13. Which also happens to be my birthday! Yay for me.

In short, a joint project between builder Tom Schey and environmentalist Kelly Meyer, the recently completed LEEDandreg Platinum certified project7ten, one of the most environmentally friendly homes in California, opens its doors for three weekends in October to educate and raise awareness about simple everyday choices and green products that can create a healthier environment.

Three weekend open houses will benefit Healthy Child Healthy World. Even better, random drawings of eco-cool prizes such as Shaklee Get Clean Starter Kits ($150 value) will be given to a lucky few.

Toxic dump

Get Clean

I don’t know how he did it because the bottle was so BIG, but my son dumped ultra bleach all over the laundry room floor. I happen to have a nice sized laundry room (yay) but it happened to be a day with dirty laundry all over the floor (boo.) The dark clothes took it the worst. The bleach ate clean through (lame pun intended to cheer me up) a heavy denim skirt- making it streaking sickly yellow in color and weakening the fabric to shreds. A nice blue terry robe is now spotted and I expect the spots to weaken to holes in a few washings, too. I threw a bunch of stuff away, thanking G-d Above that no precious child got hurt. I was in the same area of the house but I was not in the laundry room itself when this all went down. Guardian angels must abound in my house, but this little incident really shook me up as a mom.

I “wiki”-ed bleach and this is what I came up with, in addition to the feeling of: “Whoh – I paid money to bring this into the house??!!” I made a mental note not to buy bleach anymore.

Since bleaches are strong oxidizing agents, they can be quite hazardous, especially when reacted with other common household chemicals. Chlorine is a respiratory irritant that attacks mucous membranes and burnsppm can be detected as an odour, and 1000 ppm is likely to be fatal after a few deep breaths. Exposure to chlorine has been limited to 0.5 ppm (8-hour time-weighted average – 40 hour week) by OSHA[2] to the skin.

My vital signs

heart health

I took a health vitality quiz today, you can take it too, if you have the time. Thanks to my friend and neighbor Laura Palmore, of Palmore Health, I found out that at least I’m honest when I take health vitality quizzes. <smile>

I performed at 17 out of a possible 30, ranking me low but with nowhere to go but up.”

It’s only one point away from the middle third of rankings, and if I can improve one point in one area, the results say “the good news is, you’re doing okay. The bad news is, you’re doing okay.” <maddeningly true>

The top third rank means “you obviously care about taking care.”

Hot

I really do make a cup of tea when I sit down here at Health Patio. Today is Earl Grey, hot. Bergamot, or Monarda didyma, the flavor in Earl Grey tea that makes it so popular, is a simple garden herb and would look lovely growing next to anyone’s patio. (Bergamot flavouring used in Earl Grey tea actually comes from the rind of the Bergamot Orange, or Citrus bergamia.)
The whole plant is strongly impregnated with a delightful fragrance. Bergamot is used as an antidepressant, and is calming and refreshing for the nervous system. It is highly useful as an antiseptic and is used as an insect repellent. When using as an insect repellent use caution and avoid strong sunlight, bergamot contains furocoumarins, which can cause photosensitivity.

Bergamot received its name from the city where it was first cultivated, which was Bergamo, Italy.

Annaâs Sanctuary in the Shade

With much support and help, I am delighted to take a figurative ‘load off’ and enter my new virtual Health Patio. It feels good to rest a moment, and be.

I hope you can tap into the same feeling.

Recently, I was intrigued by a delightful flash presentation at the cool blog run by Rabbi Infinity. I do believe he is an imagined composite member of the clergy but this just adds to the charm, in my humble opinion. He is also an expert of kabbalah, and having mentioned that, I have now exhausted my entire body of knowledge of the study of kabbalah.

The blog entry encouraged me to create an opportunity to feel the experience of sitting there quietly while the world around you is going berserk. This “takes real fortitude.”

IRL, my real life clergyperson and I sat down together some months ago (before Health Patio came to be.) I was upset that day and I try to avoid getting upset, however like most everybody, my buttons got pushed. I remember as I opened my mouth to speak/rant, I looked at her body language, and I felt something change. Her physical presence seemed open and ready to listen. Her spiritual presence was what was remarkable, and I thought, wow, how does she do that??

While still being emotionally present with me, spiritually I felt an empty space, like the space that is made when you open your arms to hug a loved one. What is that space called?

If you have an answer or response, please tell me– I can’t get it off of my mind and it just has to have some name or description. Help!
